Mother’s Day originated in the U.S. An American woman, Anna Jarvis, founded Mother’s day to honor mothers.
She remained single throughout her life and had a close relationship with her mother. Unfortunately, her mother died on the 2nd Sunday of May.
At the time Anna Jarvis also felt pity seeing the sacrifice many soldiers made for their country during World War I, and whose mothers and wives lost their contributions to the family.
Therefore, Anna Jarvis and her friends started to write letters to those in influential positions so as to encourage people to cherish every mother’s contribution to their family.
Fortunately, all her hard work paid off.
In 1913, the United States Congress passed the bill and made the 2nd Sunday of May each year an official holiday.
Also in 1914, President Wilson officially declared that Mother’s Day should become a national holiday as well; hence, the tradition of Mother’s Day has been carried on.
Moreover, carnations, Anna Jarvis’s mother’s favorite flowers, have become the symbol of Mother’s Day!
